Casey Kasem’s Family Wins Against Step-Mom

By: Mike Tuttle - May 21, 2014

Last week, the Interwebs were all abuzz about the ponderous news that beloved radio personality Casey Kasem had disappeared. Kasem’s adult children ran to court, trying to find out where their step-mother, Jean Kasem, may have taken their father, who has advanced Parkinson’s Disease. A judge awarded Kasem’s daughter Kerri a temporary conservatorship for her father while the case was being pursued.

Within hours of the judge ordering investigators to find Kasem, the golden-throated host — who can no longer talk — was found alive and well in Washington state with wife Jean. They were said to be vacationing, visiting friends in Washington. Police who found Kasem said that he was doing well and that his health was being cared for.

But Kasem’s adult children were not going away that easily. They are estranged from step-mom Jean, and have been for years. Now that Kasem is old and very ill, his children have to fight with their stepmother to get to see him. They have visitation rights, which they were alleging were violated by her taking him out of the health care facility where he had been residing and spiriting him away across state lines. For a while they even suspected she had left the country with him.

The situation so concerns Kerri Kasem that she left her job as co-host of a syndicated radio program to devote more time to pushing through legislation that would require adult children with ill parents to be kept informed of their condition and whereabouts.

Now Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Daniel S. Murphy has ordered that Kerri Kasem be given “temporary durable power of attorney and health care directive” for her father. He also ordered that Jean Kasem surender Casey’s passport to Kerri so that he can not be taken out of the country.

The judge even hinted at elder abuse in Kasem’s case.

“Isolation is a factor in elder abuse under civil law,” Judge Murphy said. “Mrs. Kasem has not allowed the children to see Mr. Kasem. What concerns me even more is that I appointed an attorney to represent the interests of Mr. Kasem and he’s not been allowed to have any conversation with his client or the doctor I appointed.”

“We are happy with the decision the court made today. Now Kerri and family can focus on bringing their father back home, where he can get the proper care and support that he needs,” said a spokesman for Kerri Kasem

There is currently no word regarding whether the judge will do anything about the pictures Kasem was supposed to see last week.

gee, a vacation in washington visiting friends sound a lot better than being stuck in a nursing home. starting to wonder if step-mom isn’t the one being wronged here. the man has a right to a life. why are his rights being imposed on by having to give up his passport if no wrong doing was found? he’s a person, not a disease!

I agree to a point. However, we are on the ‘outside looking in’, and doubtfully know the full picture. To be an adult and having to have “visitation rights” to see your parents seems tough.

I worked in an ER for years that serviced mostly elderly many cases the younger wife or husband would have isolated the biological children of the patient to the point where sometimes it would be hours or days before the family knew about the patient. Sometimes it required a phone call from the ER to notify the children. In any case, the children should never be denied to see their parent.

Good point. They filed the legal injunction only two days after not seeing him. Heaven forbid they go two whole days without daddy. I suspect this is gold digging wife fighting gold digging children. Only the court cares about elder abuse.

oh please if you can find her in the right, your a freaking mess,,get help. do not breed.

I wonder if this situation would ever have happened (wife taking hubby out of town, children requesting power of attorney) if he wasn’t worth millions?

Seriously? Moving someone around who isn’t in good condition and is suffering so much they don’t know where they are? Keeping a father from his kids who don’t know where he is, or if he is even alive? Puh-leeze.

*They were said to be vacationing, visiting friends in Washington.* If that is Jean’s account of events, I don’t believe a word of it! Anyone keeping (or trying to keep) family members apart is up to no good. I’m glad Casey’s daughter has won temporary durable power of attorney and health care directive for him.

Good for the kids. People never understand the situation unless they have been through it. The step-mother is keeping them away from their father because it is to her benefit. She may be brainwashing/lying to the father claiming the kids’ absence is because they don’t care about him and he believes it. Having just gone through the same scenario I am happy the kids won out and will get to see their father. It is horrible to be kept from a parent and denied information. Not all kids are after their parents’ money. This was not a vacation but a planned disappearance. Women like this always have a self serving agenda. It is elder abuse keeping him from his children.

True, we recently went through such a similar situation I feel deja vu. As soon as our father was unable to talk or access a phone she had complete control just like this. She made sure he died with no contact between us. Because she could.

The step-mother has kept the kids away from their father for years. They just recently starting to have time with him after he was put in the home. They (kids) believe it is for his money which they have said they didn’t want. It is a form of elderly abuse. I couldn’t imagine not being able to see my father an spend time with him if he was sick.

How can a person be alive and well with advanced Parkinsons???

  • Just Dave

the writer has too many facts screwed up, sounds like he did a second hand he told me so story. he can communicate( just not great), it’s not Parkinson’s its one that mimics it. yahoo writers do not try hard. who are you to decide whats up, that wench took the father from the kids, and moved him around. his heath is number one concern not her wants.

When his children and his lawyer are not allowed to see Mr. Kasem, I would say it is well founded. It is a sad situation, however, his welfare needs to be first and foremost.

The writer was trying to be funny using words like “ponderous” and references like the last sentence about seeing pictures last week, both of which referred to overplayed outtakes of Kasem doing his radio show.

Thank You God! Why do all these white female gold diggers, look like Anna Nicole. Except the Mr.Sterling gold digger she looks Chines and is Chines with a Asian accent voice as well. I’m glad Casey Kasem is o.k now, I miss twitting with you on twitter a few years ago Mr.Casey Kasem. I don’t know about anyone else, but it seems like in the last past 5yrs. I have heard more about gold diggers than anytime. You have V the Asian girl who keep telling nothing but lies. I think of the one with the funny looking mouth her name Eva mexican girl I can’t think of her full name but she only dates only black rich sports players and she had a part in basketball wives in a reality show, Anna Nicole and now Mr.Casey Kasem wife and I am sure there is more that will be put out in the light. My father told me, what looks good to you, most guaranteed it will not be good for you. So, just remember these women that look like a fortune to be with and now days have rearrange their whole entire body parts or some body parts through surgery or taking those shots in their butts to make their butts bigger, you just hold on to your wallet and run the opposite direction. Stick to your up bringing in having old school morals and always appreciate the beauty of naturalness. When parents give you good advice pass it on and stick with it because, it is always true.

Gee whiz…old men and their money…easy targets for pole-sliders, gold-diggers, and grown-broke-needy children.

Hoe the judge give Casey’s children complete power over their dad. The doctor will learn enough about the way he was being taken care and tell the judge to let them keep power over their dad. This is a feeling I just have.
