"Shiftless in Seattle" is the new pun circulating through the Internet after three teenagers tried to carjack a 70-year-old Seattle woman's vehicle.
The teens thought they had a foolproof plan, however they didn't realize the car was a five-speed and none of them knew how to drive a stick.
“I got a five speed in there,” the victim Nancy Fredrickson told KIROTV. “They couldn't figure out how to get it going!”
Nancy recalled the events leading up to the would-be carjacking. She explained that she had walked to the back of her KIA to get something out of her trunk when she heard someone demanding her keys. Nancy said that she thought it was a joke at first, however she knew it was real when she saw a hooded teenager holding a gun.
“It's not every day you get a gun stuck in your face!" Fredrickson said. At that point, Nancy said she dropped her keys and the three teenagers hopped in the car, expecting to make a getaway. However, the kids only knew how to drive an automatic transmission and couldn't get the car to move. Nancy recalled standing behind the car watching the teenagers attempt to steal her car.
When the teenagers finally realized that they were not going to get anywhere, they abandoned the car and took off on foot. A surveillance camera caught them sprinting across South Main Street and into a neighboring parking lot.
Nancy said she is able to laugh about the incident now, but was terrified and in tears when she called 911. Police were able to retrieve fingerprints, DNA, and fiber evidence from the vehicle. “It was quite an interesting day,” she said. “Let’s put it that way.”
