Causing an international incident is no laughing matter in today’s world of security checks and heavily guarded borders. However, one Canadian man may get off scot-free for illegally crossing into the United States.

47-year-old John Morillo of Windsor, Ontario reportedly drank eight beers and then drunkenly swan across the Detroit River. The feat lead to a joint American-Canadian search after a neighbor of Morillio’s observing the event lost sight of him.

When asked why he would do such a thing Morillo had a completely rational excuse: just to prove to his friends that he could. When interviewed by the Windsor Star Morillo made sure to get the fact that he could across.

If I’m going to be in the paper, I’d at least like them to say I actually made it, even though I got in trouble and everything. I gotta pay fines and stuff. But I don’t want it to sound like I didn’t make it, because then my buddies are going to say ‘ha, ha, you didn’t make it.’ Because that was the whole thing, to show them I could do it.

In true Canadian fashion, Morillo made an incredibly nice apology to those who he affected with the stunt and even warned brave individuals not to attempt it.

While swimming from Windsor to Detroit may not have been his best idea, at least Morillo shut his friends up once and for all.

Appreciation to my father who told me concerning this weblog, this weblog is in fact awesome.

  • Hmm…

    A. This is actually a pretty cool story.

    B. Although, who would want to purposely go to Detroit. No one.

    C. This just proves to me that all the fuss over terrorists is overblown. A drunk guy from Canada got into the country undetected. If there really was a huge terrorist presence in the US, we would be having attacks every day.
