Can You Guess What This Carved Art Is Made Of?

Taiwanese artist Long Bin-Chen is a master of his craft, skillfully carving out rounded, 3D portraits which look like they were hewn from stone.

But you may be surprised to discover that the busts are actually made of paper, carved down from a thick stack of phone books. That’s right: phone books. In an ever-evolving digital world, things like phone books, newspapers, and magazines make for a great statement to be used in Chen’s art.

“I observed that the computer revolution was changing the book,” said Chen. “Libraries were de-accessioning them. This gave me the idea for the book as material.”
