The 41-year-old actress recently became the center of scrutiny after sharing her perspective of monogamy during an interview for the May 2014 issue of InStyle magazine.

Diaz touched on the subject of monogamy saying; she didn’t think people were “naturally monogamous.”

She also elaborated on that particular theory with an unconventional notion about relationships. The former model also compared human instincts to that of animals, which caused even more controversy.

“We all have the same instincts as animals. But we live in a society where it’s been ingrained in us to do these things,” she said.

To the average reader, it would seem her remarks insinuated that she is against the practice of monogamy. Of course, the media immediately took the statement and ran with it.

Although this isn’t the first time Diaz has expressed her sentiments of infidelity, the Bad Teacher actress claims the statement was taken way out of context, reports the Toronto Sun. So, now she’s setting the record straight.

Her comments weren’t a reflection of her personal view. Diaz explained that the theory she spoke about was from the viewpoint of her character in the romantic comedy film, The Other Woman.

“That’s not what I said. My character says she doesn’t believe in monogamy…! I believe in monogamy. That is an important part of a successful relationship,” she said of her character Carly Whitten in the new movie.

“I have had (monogamous relationships). And, by the way, also, not all relationships end because people get cheated on, or people cheat. Relationships end because they end for whatever reason, but they are still successful relationships that have been monogamous for, however, long they’ve lasted,” Diaz added.

So, there you have it! Diaz is a firm believer in monogamy, and The Other Woman is not based on principles she has adopted in her personal life.

For those who want to see what her initial monogamy comments were all about, you’ll have to check out the film. The Other Woman is now playing in theaters nationwide.
