Siemens Considers Selling Off Mobile Phone Unit

Siemens posted a 35% decrease in second quarter net profit and is considering selling a majority stake in its mobile phone unit.

Motorola and Acer are said to be potential partners for this unit.

An Associated Press article says,

The company's mobile phone unit, which has been the subject of persistent speculation that it could be sold or even abandoned, dragged earnings down, losing 138 million euros ($179.14 million) during the quarter.

Siemens said it would spin the mobile phones unit off from the broader communications group, likely sometime this year.

"It is unlikely that we will keep a majority stake," said the company's CFO.

CEO Klaus Kleinfeld says that Siemens will not abandon the market.
