P2P piracy and Hollywood lobbying set the table for the Family Entertainment and Copyright Act.

As expected, President Bush signed into law a new bill aimed at cracking down on people pre-releasing a movie before its official debut.

The Family Entertainment and Copyright Act, sponsored by Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT), closes what Hollywood has perceived as a loophole in a 1997 law called the No Electronic Theft Act.

Penalties for violating the new law call for up to three years in prison and fines up to $250,000 USD.
