  • This is the picture that brought about whistles and guffaws from everyone at Google I/O today. And jeers from possibly the only woman that attended the conference. During the keynote today, Google chose to demonstrate the new Nexus 7 magazine reader with the above picture from Shape Magazine. Many amongst the audience decided to whistle to show their approval.

Which in turn drew the ire of Rebecca Greenfield from the Atlantic Wire. She wrote a nasty blurb about how much it sucks to be a woman in Silicon Valley, and how women in the tech field are now surrounded by brogrammers. She thinks the whistles “confirm[ed] every stereotype of the frat boys in geek’s clothing we’ve come to be familiar with during the Web 2.0 bubble.”

And she’s right. Google I/O is a huge sausage fest, as many who attend have taken note (see tweets below), but is it necessary to spell it out for everyone by whistling at a pretty lady during the presentation? And believe it or not, there are women in the tech sector. So show a little class next time fellas.

On a side note, does adding “bro” to the beginning of everything make it more awesome? I like bikini pictures (Even though they don’t make me want to whistle and make an ass of myself). Does this make me a browriter or a brogger?

And speaking of bikini pics, here’s some more from Shape. Sorry, I couldn’t help myself. I just don’t believe this magazine is made for women.
