The Boy Meets World spinoff–Girl Meets World–has been renewed for a second season. The Disney Channel has picked up Cory and Topanga for a second go. The series based on the one that gained huge popularity in the 1990s follows the daughter of the initial series’ main characters.

Cory (played by Ben Savage) and Topanga (played by Danielle Fishel) were teenagers in Boy Meets World. Now they’re parents of the main character in the new show–Riley. She is played by Rowan Blanchard.

The spin-off was developed by Boy Meets World creators April Kelly and Michael Jacobs. It has fast become the number one show among kids aged two through fourteen since it premiered on the Disney Channel on June 27th. Kids aren’t the only ones watching the spinoff, however.

“The series swiftly became a favorite of kids and their parents, many of whom grew up with Boy Meets World,” Adam Bonnett, the executive vice president of original programming at Disney Channels Worldwide, said.

Girl Meets World doesn’t just feature Cory and Topanga. It features an upcoming cameo of Lee Norris’s Boy Meets World character, Stuart Minkus.

Were you a Boy Meets World fan? Did you keep constantly apprised of Cory and Topanga during the 1990s? Is Girl Meets World part of your new viewing repertoire?

Girl Meets World airs on the Disney Channel on Friday evenings at 8:30 PM. Now that the series has been granted a second season, you have plenty of time to become a new–or reprise your role as an old–fan.

I really can see the comparisons between Girl Meets World and Boy Meets World already. The tone of GMW is fairly the same as the 1st 2 seasons of BMW. It’s very light-hearted with cheesy humor and full of easily relatable morality lessons. I hope Michael Jacobs also follows BMW’s method of progression where it found a way to evolve and mature while still keeping its comedic touch. Also, we got to see the actors better themselves at their craft. The two leading girls in GMW definitely show acting promise but there’s always room for improvement. I’m sure a 2nd season would provide that. Good for them!

Absolutely, I think (know) people only think of the last few seasons, pre-Minkus, of BMW and not the first two when it was ONLY on the Disney Channel. Remember, Disney still owns ABC, so, hopefully, like aforementioned, the same progression will occur today as it did in the 90’s.

I agree completely. By the way, Boy Meets World was never “only” on Disney Channel. It was also on TGIF (on ABC) during it’s entire tenure – even the 1st two seasons. (I didn’t have cable in the 90s, that’s sadly how I know lol)

I’m glad there will be a second season and hopefully more. I grew up watching BMW and now I’m watching GMW with my daughter and we both love it!
