Bloomberg Funds $50 Million To New Gun Control Group

On Wednesday, former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced that he’ll be setting plans in motion to spend $50 million towards tightening gun control.

The billionaire philanthropist’s money will fund a campaign group that aims to reduce gun violence across the United States, with hopes to win over the “hearts and minds of Americans” on “gun violence prevention.”

Vowing to take on the National Rifle Association (NRA), Bloomberg has moms, police officers, and mayors on his side with the creation of “Everytown for Gun Safety”, an advocacy group built on”grass roots” movements that supports gun violence prevention, responsible gun ownership, tighter gun laws for states, universal background checks, and battles gun trafficking. Currently, background checks aren’t mandatory for firearm sales at estate sales or gun shows.

“This is the beginning of a major new campaign to reduce the gun violence that plagues communities across the country,” Bloomberg said in a statement. “There is no question that more needs to be done to tackle this deadly problem.”

Bloomberg expects Everytown for Gun Safety to act as an umbrella organization for two smaller groups: Mayors Against Illegal Guns (which Bloomberg founded with then-Boston Mayor Thomas Menino (D)) and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, founded by Shannon Watts, a stay-at-home mother.

Prior initiatives for mandatory universal background checks have failed; in 2013, Senator Charles Schumer (D) of New York authored a bill set on making background checks universally mandatory – he didn’t have enough support for the bill to face congress.

In an interview published Tuesday with The New York Times, Bloomberg said: “You’ve got to work at it piece by piece.”

“One mom and another mom. You’ve got to wear them down until they finally say, ‘Enough.’ ”

The backlashes haven’t stopped 16 states from taking initiative and strengthening requirements for background checks before gun purchases, Bloomberg told Savannah Guthrie of the “Today” show Wednesday morning.

During his appearance on the “Today” show, Bloomberg said: “It isn’t about gun control.”

“This is simply making sure that people that everybody agrees should not be allowed to buy a gun – criminals, minors, [and] people with psychiatric problems.”

Currently, Everytown has 1.5 million members across the nation, with aspirations to garner a million more by the year’s end.

This is really about Hizonner’s ego: his personal wealth and organizations have failed to exert any appreciable impact on this issue and he just cannot walk away from it. Given his remark about his earned place in paradise should remove any doubt about this.

    • http://www.webpronews.com/author/alex-williams Alex Williams

      Nailed it.

  • Rod Willem

I’m all for the 2nd amendment rights of US citizens to possess firearms… within reason. Background checks should be mandatory. Just like one doesn’t sell a bottle of whiskey to a minor, yes?

Good to see this correspondent is writing about a real issue, and not about what body part a gloating celebrity had plastic surgery on to remove from their nasty carcass…

    • http://www.webpronews.com/author/alex-williams Alex Williams

Hey thank you Rod, I appreciate that! I am thankful for the recent comments you’ve left on my articles.

    • deen_ad

Haven’t bought any guns have you? If you had you would KNOW that we already have background checks even on those sold over the Internet.

      • http://www.webpronews.com/author/alex-williams Alex Williams

        It depends on the State.

  • Marc Johnson

Whatever your position on Gun Control, you can’t earn your way into Heaven, or we wouldn’t be celebrating Easter this Sunday.

    • http://www.webpronews.com/author/alex-williams Alex Williams

Absolutely. Personally, I think it’s rather disrespectful to make comments regarding paying off God for heaven – especially when you’re in that position of power.

    • deen_ad

Bloomturd isn’t trying to “earn” his way into Heaven, he’s trying to buy it!

  • Ken Connolly

Bloomberg will put up 50M, supporters will donate 75M, any legislation passed will be repealed as unconstitutional but Bloomberg (like Feinstein has) collect a 25M profit. Total Ponzi Scheme under the guise of “Making America Safer” when in fact it will only make us weaker and prevent honest citizens from defending themselves and our way of life.

    • http://www.webpronews.com/author/alex-williams Alex Williams

Ideally, for gun control, the whole world turns their “swords to plowshares.” There is no such thing is as “gun control”, just centralized gun control and disarming the public.

      • supergun

Why not have both. Plowshares and swords. That will keep us fed and keep the thugs, punks, and lowlives, including some liberals from killing us.

        • http://www.webpronews.com/author/alex-williams Alex Williams

In a perfect world… ah… so yea, we’d settle for both.
I am loving all the comments here, very informative.

I would suggest everyone head over to the facebook “everytown for gun safety” to learn a little bit about what real gun-safety is about. And not just another re-branded gun-control group trying to redefine the word “safety”.

YOU are aware that this man…has 6 full time ARMED guards he hired from NYPD who guard him constantly. He KNOWS better than the rest of us…

    • danshaw4

He didn’t hire them, exactly. The citizens of the city of New York are paying their salaries–part of Bloomies golden parachute.

“Do as I say, not as I do.” mentality.

  • RiskyJim

We’ll see how many politicians jump on board Mike’s train before the mid-terms. “Chirrrp, chirrrrp, chirrp” – crickets. Politicians are adept at one thing, they know how the public will vote. They are driven by self preservation. They can ignore the bogus polls and garbage information and figure out what they should publicly advocate and what will get them elected out. Why do you think they can’t pass gun control? You’re a fool if you think it’s the NRA. The people of the US don’t want more gun control, if the majority of people did want it, it would have happened a long time ago. The NRA as the left’s boogeyman is an easy to demonize group and the left uses that racist-like stereotype to villify all gun owners. That’s not going to last as the emotion of Sandy Hook has worn off. What happened to the Dems after they voted in the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban? They were soundly swept out. Votes drive change in the US, not money. If you believe that people are sheep without free will and all politicians are corrupt bribe takers, then you will believe that the NRA is pulling everyone’s strings.

He believes He has earned his place in paradise ? Uh Huh.. I guess its ok for Himself and His family to have armed protection, but not your loved ones….

    • http://www.webpronews.com/author/alex-williams Alex Williams

      Bingo.

It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven.

Matthew 19:24? (Yes, I googled it.)

  • danshaw4

Bloomberg is just another rich elitist who thinks that his money makes him right. He wants one set of rules for the wealthy elite, and another set for the rest of us. He is part of the elitist group that wants government to control everything you see, everything you read, everything you eat, wear, buy, sell–even everything you think. Nothing scares him more than the thought of independent, free Americans running around, deciding for themselves what is in their best interests. He has armed guards 24/7, but he can’t stand the thought of millions of free Americans deciding for themselves which gun to buy, or whether to buy one at all. He is a dangerous megalomaniac who has only his grandiose delusions in mind. None of “little people” matter to him. Molon labe, Bloomie. I dare you.

      Beautifully put.

I’m sure Adolph Hitler felt the same way about himself Mike!

A majority of dictators in the past 100 years have outlawed guns, this is true.

Isn’t it AMAZING that media mogul Michael Bloomberg and his new “Everytown’ group is the third or forth story appearing in Yahoo news this week.

At random, without scrolling all the way down, I counted 7 out of 20 stories centered on Bloomberg’s $50 million (tax deductible) spending on this new group.

All Bloomberg is REALLY doing is promoting even more gun sales in the U.S.

Thanks Mike! We appreciate your support for gun rights and ownership through your anti-second amendment stance.

      Spread the love.

  • Blatant Abuse

And lo, the Lord God told his New Prophet, go Son, and disarm those Law Abiding Citizens who peacefully follow the laws set forth by thy Federal Government. Then thy must spend 50,000,000 dollars, and thy place in My Kingdom is most assuredly secure.

    • Guest

I remember that scripture. What was it, Enron 9:14-16 or Walmart 31:27?

    • http://www.webpronews.com/author/alex-williams Alex Williams

      Hahaha

  • supergun

He wants to waste 50 Million Dollars to control guns. Sounds scary. Everyone knows that you could spend 50 Billion Dollars and that will not control the criminals. See Cal. politician running guns. See Attorney General running guns south of the border.

    • http://www.webpronews.com/author/alex-williams Alex Williams

It’s the thought that counts. And apparently it earns you a seat in heaven?

      • supergun

If you really want to get down to the nitty gritty,,,,,the only way to Heaven if through Jesus Christ. Plain and Simple. Many a good men and women on this Earth will not make it to Heaven unless that is in place. Sorry, but that is the way it is. Maybe he has; maybe he hasn’t.

        • http://www.webpronews.com/author/alex-williams Alex Williams

          Hence swords to plowshares.

          • supergun

Read your Bible and you will see “GOD’s People” always had their swords and spears by their sides as they rebuilt the walls of the city or plowed the ground for planting. They always had the liberals,,,I mean the heathens harassing them like we do today.

“He will judge between the nations and will settle disputes for many peoples. They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore.” – Isaiah 2:4

          • supergun

Different situations for different times. Many times “GOD” sent his people out with weapons to destroy the heathens. King David was highly favored by “GOD” but he was also a Man of War.

  • Chris McPhail

First they register, then they regulate, then they restrict, then they confiscate!

Fact: In 1994, before the Federal “assault weapons ban,” you were eleven (11) times more likely to be beaten to death than to be killed by an “assault weapon.”

Fact: Guns prevent an estimated 2.5 million crimes a year or 6,849 every day. Often the gun is never fired and no blood (including the criminal’s) is shed.

Fact: Every year, people in the United States use guns to defend themselves against criminals an estimated 2,500,000 times – more than 6,500 people a day, or once every 13 seconds. Of these instances, 15.6% of the people using firearms defensively stated that they “almost certainly” saved their lives by doing so.

Fact: 54% of these deaths are suicides (80% in Canada). Numerous studies have shown that the presence or absence of a firearm does not change the overall (i.e., gun plus non-gun) suicide rate.

Fact: Guns are used for self-defense 2,500,000 times a year in the United States.

    • 71% of gunshot victims had previous arrest records.
    • 64% had been convicted of a crime.
    • Each had an average of 11 prior arrests.62,63
    • 63% of victims have criminal histories and 73% of the time they know their assailant (twice as often as victims without criminal histories).

In 1911, Turkey established gun control. Subsequently, from 1915 to 1917, 1.5-million Armenians, deprived of the means to defend themselves, were rounded up and killed.

In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control. Then, from 1929 to 1953, approximately 20-millon dissidents were rounded up and killed.

In 1938 Germany established gun control. From 1939 to 1945 over 13-million Jews, gypsies, homosexuals, mentally ill, union leaders, Catholics and others, unable to fire a shot in protest, were rounded up and killed.

In 1935, China established gun control. Subsequently, between 1948 and 1952, over 20-million dissidents were rounded up and killed.

In 1956, Cambodia enshrined gun control. In just two years (1975-1977) over one million “educated” people were rounded up and killed.

In 1964, Guatemala locked in gun control. From 1964 to 1981, over 100,000 Mayan Indians were rounded up and killed as a result of their inability to defend themselves.

In 1970, Uganda embraced gun control. Over the next nine years over 300,000 Christians were rounded up and killed.

Over 56-million people have died because of gun control in the last century.

“Passing a law like the assault weapons ban is a symbolic, purely symbolic move… Its only real justification is not to reduce crime but to desensitize the public to the regulation of weapons in preparation for their ultimate confiscation.” – Charles Krauthammer Syndicated Columnist The Washington Post, April 5, 1996
