Google Down for 7 Minutes This Year

Pingdom has done an accounting of the uptime of the top 20 websites on the internet (according to Alexa). Their results show that Google has suffered a mere 7 minutes of downtime thus far in 2007, or 0.00540123332% downtime, and can thus boast uptime of an impressive 99.9945988%.

Of course, that isn’t the best uptime in the biz. Google, with the second biggest single website on the internet, had more downtime than #1 website Yahoo, which had uptime of 100%. Yes, somehow Yahoo didn’t go down for any measurable amount of time at all so far this year. Yes, much better than YouTube’s 4 hours 44 minutes of downtime, Blogger’s 4 hours 47 minutes, or MSN’s 2 hours 45 minutes. Yahoo’s marks are impressive, but I doubt anyone noticed when Google went down, or couldn’t find anything else to do for seven minutes.

Oh, and YouTube’s numbers are, realistically, higher than just four hours. Having your website up, but with a page that saying the service will be available again in a bunch of hours, that’s considered downtime to me. Sometimes, downtime is more than just a 404.
