Why Windows Mobile 5.0 Is Slower

Ed Hardy has an interesting article explaining the technical reasons why Windows Mobile 5.0 runs slower (or at least writes to memory slower) than previous versions on the very same hardware.

In a nutshell, it is because Mobile 5 saves to ROM instead of RAM, so that you don't lose all your data when the battery dies.

The benefit of using ROM is obvious, since losing everything because you didn't need the device for two weeks and didn't charge it. Still, I wonder if there isn't a better solution. If I had a smart phone with 64MB of memory, I'd rather back up the data to the two gig Mini SD card periodically and automatically than use slower ROM, although that seems like a pretty unreliable solution. I guess we'll just have to take the slower speeds until ROM access speeds catch up to RAM, or something.
