The threat of avian influenza, also known as “Bird Flu” has been taken up a notch. The World Health Organization (WHO) announced that the flu could be contagious.

WHO reported that the deadly virus may be mutating allowing it to be more capable of being passed between humans, based on the amount of cases in Vietnam.

“There is no evidence in any direction, but there are concerns,” said Dr. Klaus Stohr, WHO’s influenza chief. “There are elements that are worrisome.” Reuters reports:

The finding points to the greatest fear of health experts that the H5N1 virus could unleash a pandemic and kill millions around the globe if ever it gained the ability to be transmitted among humans efficiently.

While investigators could not prove human-to-human transmission had occurred, the report said that “the pattern of disease appeared to have changed in a manner consistent with this possibility”.

So far the H5N1 strain of bird flu has only been transmitted from animals to humans. 36 people in Vietnam have died from it as well as 12 people in Cambodia.

Some clusters of infections that have occurred involved people living in the same household leading to the assumption that person-to-person transmission may have taken place.
