What was most on the minds of Internet users last week? Barbaro, apparently – the racehorse fractured his leg in the Preakness, and originally had only 50/50 odds of survival. Fortunately, his recovery is going well and his chances have improved. Web surfers were also thinking about Mischa Barton, Jimmy Hoffa, and “Over the Hedge,” evidently.

This according to the Google Zeitgeist, a weekly collection of the top 15 “gaining search queries” entered into the engine. For the week ending on May 22, Barbaro came in first. His accident was seen by hundreds of people on hand at the race, and millions of television viewers.

The season finale of “The O.C.” also had quite a large audience. Mischa Barton’s character was killed off in it, but the actress seems genuinely pleased with the ending, and is hoping to go on to pursue a career in movies. Barton was number five.

Speaking of death, Jimmy Hoffa ranked tenth in the list. The FBI has been digging up a Michigan horse farm after receiving a tip that the former Teamsters president might be buried there.

Finnish rockers Lordi look like they’ve been buried, and then crawled their way back to the surface and grabbed the nearest electric guitars. Members of the heavy metal group, which is experiencing a surge of popularity after winning the Eurovision Song Contest, never appear in public without their Hollywood-quality “monster” costumes. They came in at number 12 in the Zeitgeist.

Actors in “Over the Hedge” didn’t require any makeup or costumes, even though they play animals. The animated movie was the box-office runner-up this weekend, and stars Bruce Willis, Garry Shandling, and Steve Carell. It ranked third on the list.

And so that’s some of what Internet users were thinking about recently. For the rest of it, check out the Google Zeitgeist.
