  • Office actor B.J. Novak has made it his personal mission to stress the fundamental importance of reading. His approach centers around getting children to appreciate words, as opposed to focusing on pictures in books.

According to Publishers’ Weekly, the Saving Mr. Banks actor signed a publishing deal with Penguin Young Readers Group to produce a children’s book called The Book with No Pictures.

The book, which is scheduled to be released later this year, won’t be anything like most children’s books, as no pictures will be included.

“I wanted to write a book that would introduce the youngest of kids to the idea  that words can be their allies — that the right words can be as fun, exciting, and ridiculous as any pictures,” Novak said.

“Also,” he added, “I can’t draw.”

The actor also took to Twitter to share the announcement of the new book with some 500,000 followers. He tweeted, “I am very happy to announce my first kids’ book, “The Book With No Pictures,” which Penguin will publish in Sept!”

While some have argued Novak’s approach to children’s books, a number of fans tweeted in support of the writer-actor’s efforts. Preschool teachers also lauded Novak for his work, tweeting that they are anticipating the book’s release to assist with teaching their young students to read. Another teacher also tweeted, “I’ll be the first one to buy your book “The Book With No Pictures” for my preschoolers! Can’t wait until September!!!!”

While The Book with No Pictures doesn’t have a definitive release date as of yet, Novak’s debut fiction One More Thing: Stories and Other Stories is scheduled to released Feb. 4, 2014 under Alfred A. Knopf’s publishing company.

However, Novak won’t just be hitting bookshelves. He’s also going back to the big screen in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The Marvel Comics superhero film hits theaters nationwide May 2, 2014.
