Participants who ordered a Developer Transition Kit to help change their applications from PowerPC to the Intel platform can exchange the DTK for a new Intel-based iMac.

Apple announced its DTK Exchange Program online, as the fun of MacWorld continues this week. Developers who ordered a DTK between June 6, 2005 and January 10, 2006 may swap the kit for an iMac with Intel Inside.

Developers can submit a request through the website for the exchange. Apple is giving developers until March 31, 2006 to make the request. Then, Apple ships out the iMac and developers can move their code over and continue working to make their applications function on the Intel hardware.

The program is a one for one exchange, Apple said on the site. Developers who decide to participate in the exchange get an iMac with this configuration:

17″ iMac 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo
160GB Serial ATA drive
SuperDrive (DVD+R DL/DVD+RW/CD-RW)
512MB 667 DDR2 SDRAM

In an unexpected bit of generosity, Apple will pay for the DTK to be shipped back to them as well as the shipment of the new iMac. The existing terms of the Hardware Purchase Agreement for the DTK apply to the new system, so developers do own the iMac received through the exchange.
