AOL AIM Upgrade Flawless?

    August 18, 2005

American Online (AOL) rolled a package deal on Thursday with the update to AIM 5.9, and a new companion screen AIM Today. This launch was worldwide and it launched flawlessly or did it?

For some reason, a lot of European users experienced problems when they were on the program this morning. AOL says the problem had nothing to do with the launch of AIM 5.9 though.

“There were some sporadic outages in the AIM network early this morning due to a software upgrade on our servers,” said AOL spokesperson Andrew Weinstein. “The issue was unrelated to the upgrade to AIM 5.9, and we were able to address it in less than an hour and restore full access for any affected users.”

Having played a bit with the new AIM and the website, it doesn’t look to bad. AOL seems to be on a roll right now after coming off the successful run for Live8 and an apparent success for the Discovery launch. As AOL continues to change their model, one can expect to see more offerings roll out of AOL to compete with Google, Yahoo and others.
