According to a new report from AdMob, Google’s Android operating system had a very good June.  Windows Mobile had a less excellent month, however, as it apparently fell behind Android in terms of worldwide usage for the first time ever.

The most recent AdMob Mobile Metrics Report states, "Requests from the Android Operating System increased 25% month over month.  Android has 5% worldwide OS share and pulled slightly ahead of Windows Mobile for the first time."

Since AdMob works with over 7,000 publishers, this finding’s hard to refute.  The chart below shows what sort of state the global mobile market is in, then.  Given another couple of months at its current growth rate, it seems possible that Android will catch up to the RIM operating system.

And here’s one other note: in case you’re curious about how Android’s doing in just the U.S., AdMob looked at that and pegs its share at an even more impressive nine percent.  This puts it behind only the RIM and iPhone operating systems (which control 14 and 64 percent of the market, respectively).

Anyway, a hat tip goes to Paul Boutin.

I remember when Steve Ballmer was interviewed about what he thought of the new iPhone coming out and he laughed and talked about how much marketshare MS had and that they were no competition.

Seems like he is eating a steady diet of crow since then.

These numbers are silly. “Requests”? “Market Share”? These numbers just show ad requests (clicks?) related to these OS’s. There has been a lot of buzz around iPhone and Android. Very little buzz around WinMo. I suspect these numbers have very little to do with market share.

Dumb numbers, showing only number of apps using AddMob on different platforms.
I see a lot of apps using AddMob on iPhone and Android an none on WM
