  1. It would appear that based on the companies that have publicly announced their intent to apply, very few are going after .brand TLDs. Between that and the fact that ICANN have indicated their first round of approvals will be limited to 500 applications, the ANA shouldn’t be concerned about that.

    They should still be concerned about the costs of businesses protecting their trademark IN each of the approved extensions (especially if there’s a lot of generic ones as it seems there will be). That said, historically there haven’t been many smashing successes among newly-released gTLDs, so many extensions may not be worthwhile protecting trademarks in. Many of the mainstream businesses protecting their trademark in .xxx didn’t really need to. They’re afraid of potential damage that wouldn’t really be likely.
