Amazon has launched a free application for the iPhone and iPod touch that allows users to download any e-Book from Amazon’s Kindle store on Apple’s mobile devices.

The move by Amazon is the first time it has made its Kindle content available to be read on an outside platform. iPhone and iPod touch users will still have to visit Amazon’s Web site to buy books, as they are unable to browse the Kindle store from Apple’s mobile devices. Such a feature could be added in future updates.

Kindle for iPhone allows users to buy Kindle e-books on their computers and then read them on their iPhone or iPod touch. Books that have already been purchased from the Kindle store can be downloaded for free to an iPhone or iPod touch.

A nice feature of the Kindle for iPhone app is it uses Whispersync that allows users to switch back and forth between their Kindles or iPhones while saving their bookmarks so they don’t lose their place.

Other features of the Kindle for iPhone App include the ability to adjust the text size of books along with adding bookmarks and viewing notes and highlights.

"We are excited to bring the new Kindle application to Apple’s App Store and think customers are going to love how easy and fun it is to read their Kindle books on the iPhone and iPod touch," said Ian Freed, vice president, Amazon Kindle.
