  1. It took me a almost 2 years for my site to earn a PR4 with Mr. Google. Besides adding quality content to my site (Alexa says my avg. reader spends 9 minutes on my blog) I employ a number of on-page and off-page optimization techniques so that when the search engine bots crawl my content, they rank/rate the tags, titles, keywords and structure to be in sync with my overall niche in the social media marketing and G1 Publishing space.

I use Market Samurai to find the Top 10 sites for a given KW and niche and drill down to the anchor text analysis to find the sweet spot and this is where I engage the site for a link. More often than not (now that I have a PR4) most webmasters will recip a link when asked. So far, so good.

  2. Make sure it is not a nofollow link, the link must not be blocked by meta tags, robots or other scripts.

  3. When starting any new link campaign for a client, I setup SID tags in Omniture so I can track the link traffic to the site. As there are many incremental benefits to link programs, one is direct traffic. If you get a prominent link position on a web page that is highly relevant to your business, you will probably see some direct traffic from that location that may turn into a lead or sale. Take articles for instance, many live on the web for several years and if it is a popular article that continues to come up in search results and your link is prominent you may get a decent amount of quality traffic from that location. If I find a site has delivered a good amount of traffic over time and that there are other opportunities to get in front of more of the traffic, I look into banner placement or at least more real estate on the website. Always track the work you do as it may be leading to more revenue for your business.

  4. AI recently started a new website at http://www.rockhoundgemstones.com
I have many confusing thoughts about the links and the how and why’s. I try to build links everyday and my site has an auto tracker for these links to tell me they are still in place. I still find that I am getting a little traffic, but no sales yet and I do not understand that. The handmade gemstone jewelry is beautiful and affordable. I am not sure of the real value of these links in relation to the page rank or how the SEO’s place your website because of the links.
If anyone has the ultimate answer to how to proceed and make a website work, please let me know. I could certainly use some advise/help…

Stop getting links and work on the website, no trust seals, no phone number, colors are not coordinated, pics are not click-able, pics seem poor quality, no click-able links in content area, just me, but stores online is not what i would choose for a ecommerce store, have a professionally designed template, this one looks like a 10 year old frontpage design. Navigation needs reworking. Go look at other top jewelry sites and compare. This is constructive criticism, but you really need it.
