It was just a little over a year ago that Sony announced the PS4 with only a few vague promises and a drastically different controller. There were skeptics, of course, but Sony even won them over at E3 by announcing the console would launch at $399 with no DRM attached. Now we’re five months into the PS4′s life cycle and it’s doing even better than what the most ardent Sony defenders could have hoped.

Sony announced that it has licensed 1,000 developers to self publish on the PS4. Let that sink in for a moment. There’s now a potential for over 1,000 games to hit the PS4 within the next few years as more indie developers self publish their titles on the platform. Sure, it’s nothing compared to PC or mobile, but it’s absolutely mind blowing to see a console receive so much support so early. Sony’s self professed love for indie developers has certainly paid off, especially if it’s able to amass the largest games library of any console on the market.

The number of licensed developers isn’t the only way Sony measures success though. In the below video, Sony also reiterates that it has sold more than 6 million PS4s and more than 13 million software units since launch. As for the PS4′s social functions, Sony says that there have been more than 54 million spectating sessions via Twitch or Ustream; and over 100 million screenshot or video captures via the Share button.

It’s only going to get better from here on out. Recently, Sony revealed that over 100 games would be launching on the PS4 in 2014. For a console’s first year on the market, that’s unheard of. Granted, most of the games will be downloadable titles from indie developers, but those indie titles have consistently proven to be excellent experiences in their own right. Hell, some of them, like Outlast, rival AAA games in production values.

In short, 2014 is shaping up to be a great year for Sony and an even better year for PlayStation gamers.
